Balfron Heritage Group

Balfron Heritage Group was founded in 1989 to organise and exhibition of the village’s past to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the building of Ballindalloch Cotton Works in 1790 – an event which transformed this sleepy Stirlingshire hamlet into a bustling village at the heart of the Industrial Revolution. After the success of the Exhibition in the old Co-operative Drapery in Buchanan Street, the need was seen to continue the heritage Group which has gone from strength to strength over the past fifteen years or so.

On 21st December 1835 the keys of the church were received plans were made for the opening of the church for worship on Sunday 3rd January 1836. On which occasion the Reverend Anderson of Kippen and the Reverend Lochore of Drymen opened the church for public worship. In Buchlyvie we mix our faith with fun, friendship and fellowship, to serve God through love, kindness and care for one another. We welcome all and there is a place for all who come no matter who you are or who you have been. We are part of a parish grouping and share worship with five other congregations. We do this during Advent and Lent. The Church is located at the east end of Buchlyvie Village on Main Street (A811).

The present Church Building, listed as a Category B building of Special Achitectural or Historic Interest, stands on a site which has been a centre of Christian worship for many hundreds of years, possibly since the 11th Century. Our present Minister, inducted to the Church in 1997, is the 19th incumbent of the charge since the Reformation in 1560! Two of the earlier Ministers, a father and son, served continuously from 1743 to 1823, the son going on to be Principal of Glasgow University.

Rebuilt in 1823 around an original Kirk of 1642, only the bell was retained and is still in regular use today. With its superb Victorian, Memorial World War and modern stained glass, this is a beautiful, yet simple house of God. A much needed Session house was added in the kirkyard in 1992. Fintry and Balfron are linked churches, sharing a minister.
